unusual rock art panel
Small painted poly chrome panel in small overhung alcove in large boulder on hurricane mesa. The style is unlike any other in the area. There are two red barrier canyon style figures but the other ones are unique. A large yellow snake outlined in black over arches the entire panel. there are pairs of depressions that have been modified by drilling. These have been painted yellow and orange and resemble eyes. these painted depressions are a Pecos polychrome characteristic. A prickly pear is in the panel in green. The large yellow and orange oval things outlined in black are unknown but seem to be important parts of the composition The panel seems to be concerned with the harvest of wild seed plants. The orange and red cross hatched thing could be a basket. I made a good sketch and will try to get it scanned and posted. The photos have been digitally enhanced. There has been a lot of weathering. This could possible a late archaic grand canyon polychrome?
